Solar Battery Storage Systems

Batteries store surplus electricity produced by your solar panels, allowing you to use that power when the sun isn’t out. By capturing clean, renewable energy during the day, you can run your home more sustainably and take a big step toward energy independence.

While solar panels are the first step in switching to renewable energy, adding a battery lets you make the most of your system. You can pair a battery with an existing setup or include one with a brand-new solar installation. Keep in mind that in some parts of NSW, your electricity distributor may have specific rules about battery installation.

How does solar power work when the sun isn’t shining?

Solar panels generate electricity only when they’re exposed to sunlight. If you want to use solar energy at night or during cloudy conditions, you’ll need to add a battery to store the extra power your panels produce. Drawing from your battery instead of the grid increases your self-reliance and reduces dependence on conventional electricity sources.

Solar batteries and energy storage devices

Installing a battery is an excellent choice if your goal is to cut electricity costs, boost your independence from the grid, and store clean energy collected from the sun.

Are solar batteries worth it?

Australia’s energy market is going through major changes as more households adopt renewable technologies. This is a great time to invest in a solar battery, especially with government rebates available to lower the upfront cost. Depending on the battery you choose, you could also join a virtual power plant network to trade excess energy and earn rewards.

Do feed-in tariffs still apply if I have a battery?

Yes. Feed-in tariffs apply to any excess energy you send back to the grid, even if you have a battery. If your system produces more than you need at a given time, the unused electricity is exported to the grid and credited to your electricity account.

Are battery rebates available?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now available. Households and small businesses may be eligible for around a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing a small-scale solar battery. The discount will be based on the solar battery’s usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030.

What is solar self-consumption?

“Solar self-consumption” refers to using the solar energy your system generates instead of sending it to the grid. By adding a battery, you can significantly increase your self-consumption, keeping more of your clean energy for your own use and reducing grid reliance.
